general attack, in which the sufferings real and apparent
of the mother had the greatest weight overpowered her and
she gave it up. A misunderstanding which ensued about
the not giving up her letters in the manner required, seems
to have displeased, even to have rooted out all sentiments
of affection, and to have established in their room a
degree of animosity or rather rage against me, and
still greater against my friend Pleshijeff who is charged
with having been the cause of what she now
calls her folly. This at least is the result of the last
reports. The fact may be much exaggerated, but
at any rate the consequence is that the affair is entirely
at an end, and I have accordingly accepted
of an offer which Prince Potemkin made me
at his return to take me under his orders and employ
me at Cherson. I am now impatient to be setting
off, as well because I am tired of doing nothing,
as because I wish to be out of the way of those to
whom I have given so much uneasiness to no purpose.
