Prince Potemkin has just now made me Lieutenant
Colonel in the army, and I am now on the road accompanying him
in the visitation he is making to his Governments.

The being taken with this rank into the army without having had
any military rank before, is perhaps an unprecedented favour;
but the manner in which the Prince treats me is still more flattering.

I cannot as yet, Sir, give you any amount of what my employment
will be: but I make no doubt it will be to my satisfaction.
Just before I left Petersbourg, thinking it might give you pleasure
I had my portrait painted. My friends who saw it told me the
likeness was strong. Mr Sambouski who is a very good
friend of mine promises to deliver it you as he goes to
England in the spring, and it is he who will at the same time
give you this letter. He is pretty well acquainted with every
thing that has happened to me of late, and has in several instances
rendered me service. I hope before long to have the satisfaction
of hearing from yourself that your health has not suffered this
