For any great work that is wished to be done quickly there is a large
estate of three thousand slaves in the neighbourhood belonging to my
friends Mother in law over which he has as much power as he chooses
to assume, for example while we there he ordered a plantation to be
made in a spot he chose for a garden near the house on which
there are no trees. The overseer immediately told him that he
would take a thousand of his mothers peasants and 300 of
his own and in one day he should have a plantation of near
3,000 young trees taken up with their roots from the adjacent woods.
Assistance of this kind therefore there would be no want for.
The master will give up the entire management of everything and
the keeping all the accounts to such people as I can assure him may
be relied on and will not interfere except in trifling concerns
of ornament and particular convenience to himself whenever
he can find time to come & make any stay there.
Apples and in general all the hardy fruits of England grow very
well there but are scarcely to be found from the want of culture.
They are however cheap enough brought from adjacent parts of the
country where they have happened to cultivate them.
I make no doubt but other people would be glad to make so similar
engagements but there are but few that I would trust to or that I could
be induced either to have any such concerns with myself or to recommend
it to others. The most important of the concerns remember is
the fermentation & distillation of Spirits. Malt making, Grinding Mills,
choice of grains proper & the growth of potatoes are important as subservient
thereto
