Dear & Honoured Sir May 28th OS 1784

Owing to an accident not worth troubling you with the particulars
of, I have just received an old letter of my Brother's in which
he takes notice that amidst very kind enquiries and good wishes, such
as might be expected, you seemed to have let fall something like an
expression of dissatisfaction at the thought of never having received
a letter from me during my peregrination. This, dear Sir,
allow me to observe, is the first intimation I ever had of your
expecting or wishing for any such thing: and indeed for my part
however it may have appeared to you, to myself I have appeared to
be writing to you all: along: for my letters though diverted to my
Brother have in part been written to the whole family.

If this be not a sufficient apology for not writing to you any
otherwise, I have no better to offer to my Father: for I have
written no oftener to him than I have to you, unless when
particular exigencies have required me to address myself to him
exclusively. In fact as I have no particular event to communicate
to one of my friends more than another, a letter to you can answer
no other purpose than that of testifying the affection and respect
I have ever born you: sentiments which you can have no doubt
of my entertaining, without attributing to me a degree of ingratitude,
of which none of my friends I hope will ever have reason to suspect me.
