Kritchoff 18th July OS 1784
I believe I before told you that there were two Englishmen here one a Tanner the
other Carrier engaged by the Prince for the purpose of establishing a leather
fabrick in the English manner. One of them the Tanner is a Quaker
and a very intelligent honest fellow desirous to his utmost to do any
thing to oblige me in return for some service I have done him. His wife whom
he left behind is now coming out to him at the Prince's expence, and as he
has little to do here now I have got him permission to go with a Courier
to Petersburgh where if he does not already find his wife I shall do all
I can to contrive for him to go to fetch her that at the same time he
may execute a number of Commissions for me. This he would be probably
better able to do than you or any of your acquaintance. His name
is James Notman. He is from Newcastle upon Tyne and his direction is at Mr
King's Glasshouse there. He had for a Guardian one William Miller
a seedsman in Edinburgh a Quaker particularly noted for his honesty at whose house he was brought up, and who
I have given him Commission to engage is probably known by some of your friends the different kind of workmen 6
persons in all and his connections seem such as promise me the people
best suited for my purpose. Some he is to engage Salaries to, others only
their expences coming out. If he In case he does not go to England
some of my commissions the above mentioned James King his relation
can execute. I have reason to have the greatest confidence in him and
have therefore instructed him how in case of his going or not going
he is to address himself to you for money, after having first assured himself
from Mr Sutherland at Petersburgh of your having credit given
you for that purpose. In case also of his hearing from you of
