my friend Ribanpierre's commissions not being executed he will probably
find a person or persons suitable. Whatever commissions I have
given him regard only workmen, models of some mills and farming people
for Ribanpierre and if anything which you or your acquaintance have done may
has in part done the business you have only to let him know as much
in answer to the letter you will receive from him and he will act
accordingly. Messrs Anderson, Dinwiddie & Henderson I hope to see
at any rate. A circumstance happened here 2 days ago which made
me particularly wish for some countrymen skilled in the art of spirit
making & distillery. Great abuses have lately been found in the
management of the Prince's estates here, there brought on enquiries
into all the branches when it appeared that so much spirits were
not distilled from a given quantity of corn as is expected, and upon
that the man charged with that business was offered all he could
make above the quantity which not only frequently but most frequently
is made upon his insisting by Contract that there should be that quantity, but
he frightened at the idea of a contract refused it and things remain
as before with only a reprimand. His Corn spirit fabrick at
this place only brings a profit of 20 thousand rubles a year to the
Prince. Probably therefore the extra quantity produced by a better management
might amount to some thousand rubles, and probably a person
of any recommendation might have the Contract.
It is very unlucky that I have not yet been able to have any letter
from you by which I can know anything about your acquaintances
coming out.
