Let me beg of you Sir, once more to give me in your next
letter some little account of Farr & Charles. With respect to my
Mother what you say of yourself I suppose always to regard her also
except as to your healths which I suppose with both to be good when
I hear nothing to the Contrary: but with respect to those with whom
I spent the early part of my life as with brothers, how can I but
regret the having had scarcely any news of them during a period which
must have made some change in their situation. My brother has
seldom mentioned them and you, I believe Sir, never.
As to my Salary I can tell nothing about it, and while I can
receive what money I asks for I do not know how to insist upon it's
being settled. Dishonestly tis true I could make money, but the
more confidence is put in me the less I shall be disposed to
turn it to my private advantage. A thousand rubles a year
being fixed by the particular order of the Empress I should must always
have while in the service. More I have not a pretence for being
in want of. I am however always in hopes of finding money
honestly and the hopes at least amuse.
