Extract of a Letter from S.B. to his Brother Jy B,
dated Krementchick 18 July 1784 O.S.
Recd 12 Septr. 1784 N.S
A Short time ago there came a Ship Load of
Raggamuffin Italians, which were brought in, first,
I believe, to Cherson then to Octiar a Port in the
Crimea, among them was an Englishman, who,
as soon as it was known he was a Coal Miner,
was set to search for Coal in that Country: I found
the poor Fellow almost naked, & living on five
Copecks p day (/2½, English) the same as his Companions
had; when I spoke of him to the Prince he
promised him a good Salary, and when I
said he was almost naked, he Commissioned me
to give him 200d rubles to buy Cloaths; This
I think proves no small degree of generosity, as —
well as a favorable disposition, towards us English:
I gave the Man and his wife 25 rubles Each
to Cloath themselves, the remaining 150 I was
afraid to trust them with immediately.
