St Petersburg 10 Septr. 1784
Sir,
As I give you the Command of One of the
Battalions of Musketeers which are in White Russia,
I acquaint you that they shall have their Winter
Quarters in the Neighbourhood of Kritchoff.
My intention, Sir, is that they shall be capable
one day, of serving at Sea, therefore I exhort
you to do what ever is in your power to qualify
them for it; with the merit which, I know,
you are possessed of, I am very well perswaded
that you can accomplish it.
They tell me from Cherson that the Cordage is
in a bad condition, and scarsely fit for use,
I beg you will take care to examine into the
cause of such an alteration in the quality, and
that you will endeavour to get it made better
for the future, on my part I will not fail to send
you a Man who is expert in that matter. I am
with the most distinguished esteem
Sir
your most obedt Servt.
Prince Potemkin.
