Critchoff October 17.th 1784
When I wrote last I had just undertaken the direction of the
Prince's different Fabricks & Manufactures here. They were under
such a miserable management that I could do no otherwise
than offer my services for the purpose of introducing a little
better order although I do not mean to continue the direction
of them longer than till next summer. Possibly however
as this place lies but little out of the road from Cherson and
the Crim to Petersbourg I may hereafter call here occasionally
and do what I can in the way of improvement, more especially
as Shipbuilding business may likewise call me here.
The Prince has within these 10 days past sent me a Batallion
of Infantry here to be under my command, giving me
to understand at the same time that his intentions are that
they shall serve one day or other on Sea and desiring
therefore that I would exert myself as much as possible
to qualify them for that change of duty in short I am
to make Sailors of them at a place near a thousand
versts from the Sea. This year little can be done on
the water for I expect the river to be frozen up in about a
month. In the spring I hope to have sailing as well as
