A box of books sent from Whitchurch. There was a list with these
according to which there was nothing wanting.
Another box made so as exactly to contain a single Volume of the
Encyclopaedia Brit: namly the ninth. Where the rest are and
how this came to have a box made to it and be packed up alone
you I suppose best know. I regret much not receiving the other
volumes, as I have no work of the kind in this part of the world
to consult on the manifold occasions which present occur.
All that I know of the above things is that they were sent me by
a Courier from Petersbourg by Col Pepoff the Prince's first Secretary.
The boxes I see are adressed to the care of Messrs. Sutherland, but not a Syllable
have I heard from him about them, or from any body how they passed through the
Custom house &c.
