I.B. Chaise horses

I have acknowledged in a former letter the receipt of a box of books namely
the Encyclopaedia Britt: and Chem: Dict: in German: but I omitted telling
you that were it not for Mr Hamilton's hearing that it was in the Custom
house and getting it out by force of interest it would have been sold
at the end of the year for the custom house fees. Remember therefore
in future when you send me anything by Shipping to advise some of
our friends of it that they may take it out of the Custom house.

April 22d 1785.

I send this by a Corporal whom I am just dispatching
to Riga to assist in the transporting of goods & people here. He takes
only three horses and one Cabitky with him because foddure is very
dear there and I cannot be certain of the time of arrivals from England.
I have directed the people to be dispatched immediately by carriers to be
hired there; but probably Dinwidie or Debran or somebody or other will resolve
on coming by post. The bulk of the things may wait till I can get news
of their arrival and send my horses for them. or they may be dispatched
immediately to Vitopsk by water. This I have left to Mr Hay's discreti
Notman is not yet come therefore I hope he comes by Sea with his quaintance
A week ago I dispatched a letter of upwards of 20
to Mr Sambouski at Petersburgh for the purpose of making him
acquainted with my views respecting this place and the Crimea, that
he may from time to time when opportunity offers explain my
wishes to the Prince. I also commission him to make apologies
for you in case any should be found necessary.

You must not expect any Wax, Tallow, &c prepared for
the loading any Vessel which may come out this Summer to
the Crim: but most probably the merchants there would be glad to
freight th it in their own account.

I am very much in want of a good Saddle horse for though I dont think
of cutting any very great figure at the head of my batallion yet on
horseback I must appear. I am become more timid than I used to be
therefore the horse should stand fire and be noways startish. A good
looking horse from England that would answer this description would not only be a great
