The day before yesterday arrived here the 4 newcastle people viz. 1 The millwright
2 the Joiner, 3 The Heckler 4 The Sailor and with them Roebuck the Gardener
and his female companion. Notman's four acquaintance I like exceedingly
They seem to have his steadiness and industry together with a thorough knowledge
of their business as to Roebuck he had been very quarrelsome overbearing
proud and irascible on the road, although he finds it necessary to become
more meek here. He pretends to bought out of his own money
3 glazier's diamonds of a Jew in of 3 which you
but indifferent, and that 3
lost so that there still remains but As the watchman I sent
to Riga for these people saw all the things opened at the Customs
and among others the parcel of diamonds which was sealed and
declares there were but six, and from other such suspicious accounts
of accidents I am inclined to believe that this Gardener is none
f the most honest. This soi distante wife had during the journey
fered her services to either of the Newcastle men wishing to be quit
f her present male and alledging ill usage as the reason.

The seeds are coming by horses which I sent from hence so that
it will be 5 or 6 days before they arrive. The people came by post and
the gardener was not provident enough to bring a single seed with him.
The bulk of the things such as tools &c are coming by water as far
as Vitepsk. Ground is or will be ready enough for all the seeds.

I have no expectation of any of the people Roebuck was to have engaged
