sort of people have made a very agreable addition to the
Colony.

In the Shipbuilding way all I have done is the trying
my new method of rowing with two ranks of oars in a boat of
40 oars which answers perfectly well. The purpose of building
this was chiefly to exercise the men in rowing and I have now
about a hundred Rowers pretty well trained. It is really surprising
how quickly they arrive at a certain degree of expertness at any thing
which is required of them. They are all Soldiers of my Batallion
as well those who built the boat as they who navigt it and I
have not one man who has ever been at Sea or d at any
thing about Ship, Vessel, or boat. nor scarcely any who had had
an ax in their hand but to chop fire wood. Yet it is with th
men without any other assistance than that of an English
I have for managing the rigging that I am in hopes of m
several considerable improvements in the construction of vess
different Kinds. The worst is that my business is so various a
have so few assistants on whom I can put the least dependance
that I have but very too little time to do any thing so well as I wish
or as I see it might be done. Morning after morning I am
taken up chiefly with disputes among my Officers however as I am
getting rid of 3 or 4 of the worst, I shall be much more at my ease.
Military Spirit & decision I have not been able to put on so soon
as the Uniform: but as the power of a Commander here is as absolute
as it can well be anywhere it will be my own fault if there is
any want of order in the batallion.

The last letter I have received from my brother is dated June 28th
and he does not say a word about the time of his departure.

I cannot yet look upon his coming as certain, and my desire of seeing
him makes me doubt the more.
