Sir/

I had the Honour of receiving your Letter by last Night's Post, and I take
the earliest opportunity of answering it, that I may give you every Satisfaction
in my Power relative to your Son, for whom I entertain the highest Esteem and
Regard. — I left Critchoff about the latter End of April, having staid
there more than a fortnight with the Collonel, he was then in very good Health
& Spirits and appears to me to be situated much to his present Satisfaction,
and I hope also to his future Emolument; between the Battallion under
his Command & the Manufacturies under his Inspection, his Time is
fully employed, but of these Things Sir I dare say he has given you a much
more circumstantial Account, than I can be supposed to do. — I had
the Pleasure of seeing Mr. Bentham of Lincoln's - Inn frequently during the
short Stay that I made in London & I gave him all the Information I
could relative to his Brother and also to Prince Potemkin, the latter I
hope may be of Use as it was of such a Nature as could not well have
been transmitted from Russia.

The Empress was set out upon her Excursion before I left St. Petersburg.
I had the whole Account of her intended Route from our
Ambassador Mr. Fitzherbert, who had the Honour to be invited to make
one in her Party. her Intention was to go to a Place called Vignoi-Volochoc
upon the Road from St. Petersburg to Moscow, to look at a Canal begun by
Peter the great, which forms the inland Communication from Astracan
to St. Petersburg; but She had not the least Idea of passing near Critchoff
which lies quite another Way & which it is not probable that she should even
touch at except she should resolve to visit the new City of Cherson and
