Bath Sunday Septr 25. 1785
Sir
I have been lately favour'd with a Letter from your good Father dated
Paris Sepr. ye 2d instt, which has lately been transmitted to Me hither from
my house in London, wherein he writes to me as follows "a few Days
"since I sent your Stockings & one Pair of Gloves, with your —
"Son's Letter, by Major Gall, who promised to give them to my Son
"and I now take the opportunity by the favour of Major Morrison to
"send the other two Pair of Gloves, and the Pair of Socks which
"the Major has promised me he will send you" These are
your Father's own words;
Since which I have had transmitted to me (in a frank Cover by last Satys post) a Note, left at
my House in Town, to the following purport "Major Morrisons
Complimts. to Mr B— has sent by this Servant the Two
Pair of Gloves &c which Mr Pattle beg'd he would —
deliver upon his arrival in London dated Royal Hotel
Tuesday the 13th (instt) — Not
being in hopes my Son's Letter to me was put in the
Parcel of the two pair of Gloves, I wrote to a Friend of mine in
Town, to call at my House, & see whether there was any
such Letter from my Son, to be found in those Gloves or —
otherwise left there, and in answer by this day's
Post, my friend tells me that there were two Pair of
Bever Gloves & one pair of Socks but which were had
been left open without so much as, a Bit of Paper
round them, & no Letter in them, wherefore my Friend
is of the opinion that my Son's Letter with the Stockings
had been given to the care of some other Friend who has
not yet delivered that nor the Stockings.
Imagining therefore therefore that my Son's Letter with the Stockings may have been
given to you by Major Gall, or another left by Major Gall at your House
