Epsom the 11th. Oct. 1785

Sir.

Returning this day sennight from an
excursion into the West of England, I found waiting me
here your favour of the 25th of last month, and going
the next day to town, at my house then I found
Major Gall had left two Letters with a pair of Stockings
and a pair of Gloves for you; these I immediately
sent by my Stewart to Queen Square place, intending
to have waited on you the next day, but he brought
me word you was not returned from Bath, and that
your Servants did not know for certain when to
expect you. I have since that been very much indisposed,
or I should not have suffered so many days
to elapse without taking up the Pen to express my
regret that my absence from home should have
occasioned you a degree of anxious suspence:
Mr Gall left you Letters & c on the 19th and return'd
immediately to Paris, in consequence of the death of
his father. I hope your accounts from Mr Bentham
are so satisfactory as to make you ample amends for
your anxiety, which I cannot wonder at, because
such distinguished Merit as your Sons will naturally
excite the fullest force of parental affection, and every
consequent
