Constantinople 24th December 1785

My Lord

I was honoured with your Lordship's Commands
by Mr Bentham who arrived here towards the end of
November, and departed for Crimea the 10th instant, I flatter
myself, fully sensible of my particular regard & attention
to your Lordship's most respectable recommendation of him.

The Season of the year not permitting a Voyage by the
Black Sea, Mr Bentham and his Company consisting in
two English Gentlemen were advised by the Russian
Envoy to take the Journey by Land.

According to this Plan I provided him with one
of my own Coaches fit for this Route, and I introduced
him to a Greek Lady, Sister to the Reigning Prince
of Moldavia then on departure for her Brother's
Residence of Jassy, who very kindly undertook the
care and protection of the Party to the Frontiers of Russia

They actually set out the 7th instant but the attempt
proved unsuccessful owing partly to the badness of the
Roads but chiefly to the Overcharge of Baggage.
They lost eight hours in performing the first Stage,
and only arrived with the Harness entirely demolished.

The Marquiss of Lansdown
