upon it.
The Copies of the Three first Letters were made for the
Perusal of the Writer's Friend, Sir James Harris, and
likewise of Lord Howe, upon an application I made
to them both, with a view of procuring two or three
Shipwrights for his assistance in what he had then
much at heart; upon which occasion Sir James
was so obliging as to interest himself; and Lord
Howe in consequence of my waiting upon him, and
leaving those Letters with him for his perusal, was
pleased to tell me He remember'd my Son before
he went abroad, & suggested to me a method by
which the assistance he wished for might be obtained
at a proper time of the year, and when his Lordship
return'd me those Letters He accompanied them
with one from himself expressive of the satisfaction
the perusal of them had given him — to find a genius
that promised Improvements from Sciences beyond
what mere practise, such as That of our Common
Ship-builders, is capable of Striking out.
But I would not be understood to mean to trouble your
Lordship with perusing those three Letters, knowing as I do
