that you have been long ago acquainted, by means of his
Brother, with their Contents, as well as with the purport
of some others in this Collection; I therefore beg leave
only to recommend to your perusal the Letters from
Brighthelmstone— Paris— Florence— Genoa— and
Constantinople; some of which by the Anecdotes they
contain relative to Persons known to your Lordship,
may possibly afford you, and perhaps, Lady Lansdown,
some amusement.
As my Son had the happiness of knowing the
Accomplishments her Ladyship possesses, I can easily
imagine, he could not lose sight of them, tho' he was
ever at so great a distance, when a view presented
itself to him that naturally bought to his recollection
a means by which so desirable a Scene might be
transported even to England.
Tho' I cannot help regretting that both my Sons should
for the present, be, as it were, lost to their Country and
to me, yet it is some consolation, and indeed the only
one, to think that looking upon themselves as Citizens
of the world they are not without an ambition of
being of use somewhere to Mankind; which, it must
be confessed is much better than spending their time
in mere speculation, or frivolity here at home.
