June 17.th 1786.
Dear Sir/
Though Mr. Benson's Letters do not contain any
Intelligence of Consequence with which you are not informed,
as they are not of so late a Date as those you did me the
honour to read to me in London; yet knowing how anxious
you as a Parent must be to be informed of every minute
Particular relative to your Son, I thought it might be satisfactory
to you to learn from Benson's Account that the Colonel and the
Director general of the Prince's Estates are now upon the best
Terms, that the Reception he gave them in their way to Riga
was unendingly polite, & that not only in internal Compliments
but in Reality as he had a large Sum of Money ready for the
Colonel agreable to a Promise which he had made him; I am
the more pleased that they are in such Habits of Friendship, as they
may be essentially serviceable to each other & because when I was
at Crichoff there was a Degree of Coolness between them.
I fear Self-Interest has no small Share in my writing this
Letter to you Sir, as I trust that I may be favoured at a leisure
Hour with the Communication of any agreable Intelligence that may
