My Lord
I have to acknowledge your Lordship's goodness in the
Letter you have honoured me with dated the 11th inst.t which
even by way of London, reached me hither up on the 13th
at noon. The inclosed
Letter you therein favoured me
with from my Son of the 1st Octr. last, as you had reason
to think could not fail of it's welcome, since it contributed
to render his Journal more full in point of matter, and
serves to give one a still further notion of the Politics of
Places he was at; and Persons he was with. If the
functions of a Ministerial Resident were what he would
like, his abilities might possibly be adequate to them;
at least one might conclude from his observations,
and the accounts he gives of things, he would not be
deficient in point of assiduity & investigation; but I
cannot help being at a loss to conjecture to whom that
inclosed Letter from him could be written; it might
be intended for your Lordship's perusal, but from the
stile of it, it certainly could not be addressed to you.
your Lordship is so obliging to say "you return it me
as desired" but I do not recollect I ever saw it before
Connected, as it has been my fate to be, with Russia,
I shall be happy to see the Gentleman your Lordship is
