Cheltenham Septr 15. 1786
Dear Sir,
Whether you may have thought me deficient in point of Politeness
in not having taken occasion to wait upon you to know if you
had any Commands to Russia, or whether you may, by
any means, have been informed of my having been —
deficient in point of Courage by not putting in Execution
a Resolution I acquainted you I had formed of Setting
out upon a visit to my Sons at Chritchow
, is more
than I can tell; of the two, however, I should be
much more concerned to be suspected of the former; but
the fact is, that partly by the expostulation of my Friends,
and still more so by the account I had received from
my Son Jeremy of the difficulties & Inconveniences he had
encountered in his Journey by Land from Constantinople
through Poland, I found myself under the necessity of
of dropping an Enterprise, which, upon mature consideration
I had reason to think myself unequal to.
Since which an Event has taken place in my Family
that occasions my giving you the trouble of This, My
Son in Law Mr Abbot, the Elder of the Two Brothers, is
lately married to a young Lady of Large Fortune, and
thinking it material for his own health, & that of the
young Lady's to have a House in the Country near Town
his Engagements in the Office he holds in the Court of King's
Bench being such as will not allow him to be at any
great distance from it for any length of Time, we
