of Poland. The heterogeneous mixture of People here
is surprising, consisting of Poles, Jews, Russians,
Germans, Don-Cossacs, and English. on a Market
Day when I behold such an odd medly of Faces, &
Dresses. I have more than once started and wonder'd
what brought me amongst them.

It is how ever only from the Russian Officers & Soldiers
that the true Communication can be learn'd, but
indeed upon the whole I firmly believe that none
of the English will ever learn it perfectly. Take
the following words as a Sample of the Writing
Character and Language. , Huckle.
Hemp., Bread. Tow, a Man
It is said however to be a fine Language.

With respect to the weather in general, it differs much from what
is usually experienced in England with regard to the two
Extremes of Heat & Cold; and though I never beheld such a
beautiful Country, or such luxuriant Vegetation as
in Summer, yet it is totally the revers in winter being
one dreary waste covered with Snow. When we
arrived here we thought it very warm, but the greatest
Heat we felt was in August when Farenheit's Thermometre
stood at 82, tho' we are only in Latitude 54, nearly
the same as York. This is in great measure owing
to the sandyness of the soil which reflects back the
Sun beams with an ardor I never felt before —
