we have not got here; and I think this loss is
compensated by others we have much more
beautiful. I have made a considerable Collection
of Seeds Native to the Crimea but can find no
means of sending them home. I shall try to
get Mr Fitz-Herbert the British Envoy to take
some in Charge for you he is expected here
next month with the Empress. I sent Mr
Lee some Seeds which Mr Bentham and I
picked up in our voyage thro' the Greek
Islands and at , in the month of
August - I sent for Miss Lee to the care of Mr
Bathold at his Excellency Sir Robt
Ainslie's
British Ambassador Constantinople, a Box
containing Specimens of most of the Insects
here, but I have not yet heard a word
upon the Subject from either Mr Lee or his
Daughter.
In my former Letter I mentioned to you the
beautiful the beautiful Surface & fine soil
of this Country and also gave you some account
of the Plants such as I have seen here, but
I have not yet made the Tour of the Crimea
as to Fossils, we have very little Variety the
rocks are in general a porous Limestone full
of Shells some of the Oyster kind of an enormous
