Size; there is also plenty of Chalk with black
on the South Coast I have found some kind of
black Lava and Jasper. The Clay is mostly
mix'd with small calcarious sand so that it
makes bad Bricks and Earthen ware. we have
no mines of either Gold or Silver as has been
expected, and there is but a small quantity
of Iron Stone which is so plenty in every where else
they have made many trials for Coal but
without Success. The Limestone being so plenty
is an bad sign of it. They have plenty of Fullers
Earth which the Tartar's use for soap, on most
occasions. There is some time yellow -
Arsenick found in the Crimea, but I don't
yet know the place. They discovered some
time ago a black Stone near Jaganrock on
the Sea of Agoych. It has perfectly the appearance
of Coal but is not inflammable, while I am
upon the Subject of Coal I must just observe that I
have seen near Pont St Espirit on the River
Rhoan in France and also about 40 Miles from
Constantinople on the European Coast of the
Black Sea. Coal exactly the same kind as that
you have seen from Bovey in Devonshire, large
Lumps of Bitumen are brought in Horse Load
to Constantinople from somewhere in that
neighbourhood and sold I believe for
purposes as Pitch, they say very large quantities
of it were sent formerly to Egypt for embalming
the dead. — A Spring at Eniculi on the East State
