of the Crimea affords plenty of Petrolium which the
People burn in Lamps. I have got specimens
of all these different Minerals but they are
totally lost upon me, as I have no method of
sending them home to my Friends. Since my
last Letter to you I discovered a beautiful species
of Salvea with winged leaves and trailing Stalk
the Flowers very large & quite elegantly
spotted with red. I secured plenty of the Seeds
but to little purpose; they remain here
with many others.

Mr Bentham went to his Brother at Kritchoff
near Mabichoff in Decr 1785, and left his
Baggage with me, it still remains here
for want of an opportunity of conveying it
to him

You have will no doubt suppose that I have made
some progress in the formation of a Botanic
Garden having been here about 14 Months,
however the People who are now the Rulers
of this Country act & even think very
differently from the English. I picked upon
two different Places for that purpose, but
the situation of these not being approved of
I am indeed to go in quest of another
The weather has been lately so bad & the Ground
covered with Snow that I could not attempt
to go on a business of this sort, till now we
