It is not impossible but that you may meet with some
one or other who may remember my Son Sam's being
at Berlin in the month of Octr 1779 (in his way to
Petersburg) for upon turning to a Letter of his when he was there of that
Date in wch he writes
That "Mr Elliot the English Minister was is not then at Berlin
"there so that his Secretary Mr Liston was is Chargé des affaires
"I dined with him yesterday, to be a sensible
"Clever Man in his way. In the Evening he took me
"to an assembly composed of the very first company
in the Place, there was Scarse a plain Madame in
"the Room they dansd Country Dances & playd at cards
"I danced 4 or 5 Dances I had two Countesses for my
"Partners one of them I think very near if not the
"quite the finest Woman in the Company we had a kind
"of supper amidst the Dancing nothing but french
"scarcly was Spoke the whole Evening the Kings French
Minister & several others were of the Company
"names I can't remember.
and in a Letter reced from him dated Mittau in Courland
25th Nov.r 1779 after he had left Berlin. He writes
as follows.
"I don't recollect having spent more than three days
"idle since I left Mr Hembury (at Hamburg) These
"were at Schwedt, there where I paid my respects to
"the Margrave first Cousin to the King of Prussia who
"absolutely did every thing but force me to spend three
"days there and made me promise to write to him
"when I arrived at Petersburg"
