Cherson 15th Novr. 1787
I wrote a short letter to James Notman about a fortnight
ago by Ivan whom I discharged at his own request,
impatient as he said he was to return to his wife.
He was scarcely content when I paid him about 20 rubles
more than his due. I did not write to you by that conveyance
because 1er I had no reason to believe but what you was set
out on your return, and 2de. I did not believe the conveyance
to be sure & 3dy you will have it that laziness had its
influence. Although I spend much time in making my
lamentations for the plagues you have had & still have
with my affairs yet I will not lose more time in
writing them. The best news I have to tell you is
that I have received a letter from a Secretary at
Mohilew informing me that the payment of my
Salary of 1000 rubles a year is transferred from Petersbourg
to Mohilew treasury where I may receive my
arrears at any time by sending a person authorized from
me. After the 1er January next the amount will be 4,000. Ro
The Bearer of this is furnished with an apart letter of power
to receive this sum
