Cherson Jan 7th 1788.

Although I never asked to be placed in the Navy
Department the Prince has thought fit to
order me to give up my Batallion and
become a Sailor.

I have desired Medvanoff
who is gone to him to expostulate upon the
impropriety or rather to make known that
I had rather continue in the terra firma
line Ships have no horses to draw them.

In the meantime however I am giving up
my Batallion. Send the enclosed as
soon as possible and let me hear from you.
Adieu
S.B.
