Gluboka, 30 Versts below Cherson in
the Dnieper, May 22d O.S. 1788
Hond Sir
The distance is so great between us, and the News you have
from hence so very false and uncertain that I cannot but think,
it my Duty, under the present Circumstances to write you a few
Lines, every now and then, if it be only to asure you of my
existence. I have told you that my Division consists of the
Bomb and Fire Vessels. The Turkish Fleet at Ochakoff is
augmenting very day; but our Flotilla, we trust, will be
a match for them; I am afraid however it will be some
time before any thing decisive be done.
In health I am as well as you can wish me to be.
I have no news from my Brother of his arrival in England
but I hope you are together long ago.
The Circumstances I am in at present I hope will
excuse the Shortness of my Letters, the Object of which are
only to asure you, of the affection and sense of Duty
with which I remain
Yours
Saml Bentham
