Chesson Jany 27" 1789. O.S. 12

About 3 weeks ago, I wrote by the post to inform you of my
new destination since that I have been occupied in giving
up my regiment, which business I hope will be finished in
a few days when I shall bid adieu to Chesson. As however
the opportunity of sending this letter promises to be surer than
the post I must tell more fully how this change happened.

In a letter which I sent by an acquaintance who set off from
hence for different parts of Germany I told you among other
things of my wish to revisit Siberia and change the regiment
which I have here for some one in that part of the country.
This desire of mine which I had published to all my acquaintances
probably through the channel of some one who wished to have my
regiment here came to the ears of the Marshal who when he
came here asked me if I really desired such a change. I reminded
him of my having on former occasions acquainted him with the
preference I gave to that part of the Empire and that independent
of the ill health I had been subject to since my stay
in this part of the country making me very desirous of quitting it,
there was no part of the Empire where on account of my own pleasure
or the prospect of being my services being most useful I would
not quit for Siberia. The thousand reasons I have to decline
making another campain as Colonel in his division it was most
prudent to keep myself Nine officers who wished to go
