I told you I think in one of my letters that I expected to receive as a
farther mark of her Majesty's favour a gold hilted sword with an inscription
denoting the service for which it was given it was brought me a few days
ago so that I think as a warrior I should be well contacted with my good
luck. A military order an advance of rank over the head of upwards of 40
persons, a good regiment and a sword of distinction are recompenses seldom to be
obtained in so short a time. With respect to the crop of St George it is proper
I understand for an Englishman to ask the King's to wear any foreign
order. Col Faushawe being in the English service has sent his petition through
General Conway but with respect to me we think it it through the Secretary
of State that mine should be presented therefore I would beg you, Sir, to
take the trouble of presenting the enclosed through that channel. It is
certainly only a matter for form but it seems better to comply with it.
Colonel Faushawe intending to send some general amount for our campaign
to his friend General Conway I have desired him to let me forward
his letter to my brother with whom he is acquainted that he may have
the reading of it. Your for this purpose when you have read it
it should be sealed with an indifferent seal & sent by sure hands to the General.
