Queen's Square Place
St James's Park Monday 16 March 1789

My dear Coll

The happiness the Tydings of your Promotion gave me, which
were communicated to me by your Brother in consequence of the Account
he had reced of it by Letter from your Friend at Petersburgh dated
the 30th July x last is more easy for you to conceive than for me to
express. Advancement is valuable for its own sake but when
it is owing to the merit of gallant behaviour & good Conduct
it greatly enhances that value and could not fail to give
me an additional Satisfaction. it was not till the 9th of
October that the account of it reached me when I was at
Bath, and no Letter whatever has found its' way to me
from you since one I reced from you the 22nd June last
which had for its Date May 22d O.S. i.e. June 2d N.S. —
your Time & thoughts however must have been so much
engaged by the great Events that have occurred upon the
Spot & in the Neighbourhood where you are together wth
the great distance from Petersburgh and the hazard attending
the conveyance of Letters so far, fully accounts for my not
having had the pleasure of receiving any from you since
since that which I have mentioned; how much soever my
anxiety, my wishes & my Impatience have been employed
during such a length of time. The Taking of Ackznkow
however was so important an Event that it could not
but raise my Spirits by the hopes it afforded me that
it was likely to contribute to facilitate & forward a Peace
and thereby give me a chance of seeing my dear Sam
once again during my Existence Here. The severity of
the Weather has given us a Russian Winter which is not yet
over for last Friday night the 13th produced so great
a quantity of snow as was scarcely ever remembered
before; possibly the Climate where you are may have been
the milder & more temperate on that account as weather
is known to travel as well as Birds of Passage who visit different
Countries at different Seasons.

Your thoughts probably have been too much engaged upon
subjects of more importance to you where you are, for you to
attend to any occurrances in England, or you may have had
no opportunity of being acquainted with them. I will —
therefore give you the best account of them I can. Some
time in Novbr last the King & I may truly say this Country
