desertion of the present Ministry (viz: Mr Pit &c) is the Marquis of
Lothian, who was one of the Gold Sticks in waiting & consequentially
had been in constant waiting about the King (Ld Amherst being the
other) & who had besides a Regiment of Horse, but he is now
deprived of them both by the King, who has given both to your
friend Sir Joseph York, who had just before the King's illness
been created a Peer by the Title of Lord Dover by the King's
own mere motions — indeed never were such numbers mortified
by their disappointment of principal places owing to the King's
sudden & happy recovery as a total change of Administration
wod certainly have taken place, Lord How, I suppose you
have heard, had been out of the Admiralty, sometime before
this Period of the King's illness. His Lordship was succeeded by
Lord Chatham Mr Pit's Brother together with a new set of Colleagues
at that Board among whom was Lord Hood, whom you know
and who as he is the only Seaman now at that Board, is
as it were efficient first Lord, by way of Assistant to Lord
Chatham, and is now as things have happened likely to
for sometime, by the stability of Mr Pit &c otherwise Admiral
Pigot, it is said wod have been at the Admiralty Board

I am sorry to have occasion to inform you that your friend
Mr Alexr Shairp of Broadstreet Buildings died about a month ago
and still more so that he died by his own hand having
put an end to his own existence one morning just before
he & his wife were about going into his carriage for an
Airing. He had been in a melancholy way for a considerable
time before, even last Summer when he went to Buxton
for the sale of the Bath House, indeed I don't think he had been
well since the Death of Mr Shairp the late Consul at
Petersburgh, who, if I mistake not was his brother; for one
day when I called on him soon after that Event I observed
he seemed very much affected & to be greatly disappointed
and chagrined that Mr Shairp's Son at Petersburgh did not
succeed his Father as Consul.

I am desired by a particular friend of mine of the
Secretary of State's Office, who has just sent a note of it into
my hand, to beg you will get some Information about a
