the trouble of bringing my son's Picture, to me here from
Petersburg, which been the source of the greatest
comfort and satisfaction to me, in as much as it
gives me so excellent an semblance of the Original
that an account of it's likeness, it could not be
exceeded by any of our best Portrait Painters here,
and you cannot imagine, at least it is impossible
for me to express, the mortification it was to me
that when you did me the honour to call
and leave it at my House, I was so unfortunate
as to be out of Town, and had no opportunity
of thanking you in person, for having been the
means of the safe conduct of what I set so high
a value upon; since nothing could reconcile
me so well to the long absence and immense distance
of a son that is so much the object of my affection.

having been informed, he has been for some
time closely attentive to the Military Profession in which
he is now engaged, and imagining he may possess
some genius for Invention, or at least for Improvement,
I could not resist the opportunity I have lately had
of purchasing some Military Tracts, which have been lately publishing here which I conceive
may prove of some use to him as an officer, but I find
myself under no small difficulty how to get them
