rather to reside there the short time I shall probably
remain in the one place altho' the House is less & worse.
My Neighbours the Kirgise are as peaceable at
present as One could wish, and though they steal a few
Cattle, or now & then a Mare or two, upon laying hold
of some of the Tribe, every thing is returned.
They assemble every day on the other side of the river
Irtish which marks the Boundary, bringing with
them Skins of different kinds, Horses, Oxen, & Sheep,
These they barter for Cheap Cloths, Leather Ironwork
& trumpery Ornaments. As nobody of any
note has visited their Country, there is no Chart
of it, worth looking at: and we are perfectly —
ignorant of it's Products, altho' it is reported there are some Mines of Silver, & Gold, as well as Copper
I am therefore preparing to set out in two or three
days on an expedition amongst them not concerned
they are People any ways to be afraid of
My general will not give me leave to go further
than fifty Versts into their Country; but when I
get so far no one can Stop me, and I must be
doing what no one else has done before me
After having spent about five weeks with the Kirgise
