the Navigation, as some of them are come back having
made a Chart of the River and Part of the Gulph,
but a Russian Cap.t with some of the Englishmen pass
the winter in travelling by Land about the Coast
This last Summer they had nothing but an open
Boat, but for next year I hope to find means of
building them a Vessel in which they may go to sea
An officer and fifty men I have brought with me
from my Batallion to be employed in preparing
Vessel for this Expedition.
Having setled this business I set set off for my other
Batallion which is at about 3500 from hence and
about the Same distance from the other. It's Quarters
are on the other side of the Lake Baikal in the
Neighbourhood of Kiachka.
It was for the purpose of getting more Intelligence
about the Chinese-Frontiers that I chose this
Batallion at so great a distance from the other
and when I have received the Command of it
I mean to have a Major there whom I brought
with me and then return here and to my other
Batallion before the Spring.
It is possible I may then go to Petersburg, and I
have permission to take a Trip to England, but if my
Projects here are attended to they may keep me here another
year before I can go to Petersburg.
