April 1790 Kojaklijevski's Report
so that in time heretofore to come on the part of the
Chinese not according to the tenor of the abovementioned
article of the former treaty but according
to the real Imperial laws in force in
Russia the requisition of the punishment of the
delinquents should be made: adopted: and by that
means the uninterrupted friendship should be arise
established. This article changing in of alteration should be
inserted modified according to the Russian laws.
To this the Chinese Commissioners answered:
That for this purpose they had not their Commission power
to act: and that the Russian Governor should
enter into negotiation with their Ambasses
As during the conference our Commissioners
had been treated with tea, so at the
finishing of this conversation conference the Chinese were
invited to our Tent. As they were passing along on their way thither
the Guard of 15 men musqueteers with an Officer presented saluted them
by presenting their arms to do them honour: and at their
arrival at the tent were treated with Tea
and afterwards then with brandy: from which they wished
to be excused: but however at last the chief of
them taking it said.
