viz: + 300 strokes of the Knout. On this occasion
the Commissioners of both sides occupied the place
on the right hand side with their focus to the East,
seated in chairs. At the conclusion of this delinquent's
punishment, he was taken from the
whip stake, and as he had the appearance of
being dead, they forbore to mark him, lest
in the meantime he should come recover his senses: and during
the carrying him to the huts tents that were set up
on our side, the Mongol, cried out, he is
dead, he is dead: and at that instant the
Chinese Commissioners and many of the Mongols
crowded in to look at him: although the
beating of [his pulse?] shewed that he was yet
alive, yet as he shewed no other signs of life, the
Chinese were persuaded that he was dead, [and
[the blood which they observed flowing they attributed
[to the still subsisting effect of the wounds.]
The Chinese expressed most sincere satisfaction,
and returned to Naimatchin, although ours begged
them to be witnesses to the punishing of two other
delinquents, who had been sentenced to 100 strokes.
