I endeavour to turn my attention from all events in which I cannot meddle as I have
variety enough in my pursuits to never want amusement

In a former letter you interest yourself much about a Colonel de la fontaine, as yet
I have not been able to get the least tidings of any such man. He is not in the
Millitary service as his name is not in the list.

The letters I have received, Sir, from you since the one of April 8 1788, are
one of 16th March 1789, One April 8th. One September 15.
one April 20th 1790 and the one today of July 8th

It gives me the greatest pleasure to observe that this last letter of yours seems
written with as firm a hand as any I ever remember to have seen of your
writing and the smallness of the character proves the goodness of your eyes
which at your age must be a particular happiness. Be assured Sir, that
must be a very important consideration respecting my pursuits here that can
me to postpone any longer the pleasure I promise myself in embracing a fa
who is so anxiously interested in my welfare. In the course of a month I hope
to inform you of my having obtained permission.

My last letter from my brother is dated Sept.r 3. 1789, I know not what he is about
but am happy to hear through you that he is well.

The Seeds you desire I will endeavour to procure you but cannot promise
till I return to that part of the country myself.

Aug.t 22.
I am just this instant setting out from hence and before I seal
this let me once more repeat my wishes that you may long yet enjoy
the same health and spirits which appear in your last letter & believe
me Dear Sir to be with the sincerest affection
Your dutiful son
S.B.

Recd at Bath on Sunday
the 7th Oct.r 1790. Jh B.
