but cards, but his play was so lucky though at the same time honourable
that he it furnished him with means of living at the rate of perhaps
10 or 12,000 livres pr month. The quantity of anecdotes with which
he was stocked and his agreable manner of relating them made
his company sought after and he was much of the Queen's society.
At length however a turn of ill luck reduced him to the necessity
of disposing of his house & effects and secretly absconding after
having made some considerable debts: but again as it is supposed
by another change of fortune the Creditors had no sooner given up
all thoughts of recovering any part of their due or seeing their
debtor, than a Banker presented himself required everyone
to bring in their demands, & fully satisfied them after after
which our Colonel shewed himself again in another part of the
Town with a new house in a condition to continue the same train.
Notwithstanding however this conduct seems little impeachment to his honour
his brother officers in the Swiss guards being remarkable scrupulous with
respect to appearances forced him to quit that corps his rank corresponding
with that of Colonel in the Army. Whether this circumstance
