Hounslow Heath
Hounslow Heath has at different times been
suggested to your Memorialist as a tract of
land on which ample and fit room for such an establishment
might be found. But one objection is
its distance from the Metropolis, from the great
security for good management guardian of probity the public eye: no
going there from London without a journey, of 10 or 12 miles and
a journey taken on purpose. [+] [+]
M Visitors in the first
line of respectability
would not go there
without a particular occasion
on account of the distance:
me visitors
in inferior lines could
not, on account of
the expence. A
situation farther than
Islington would scarce
satisfy Howard's on
this account notions
on this head
But without discuss it would be to little
purpose to discuss the importance of this objection, or the degree
in which it holds good, when there is another which
as far as your Memorialist is concerned must must
be an altogether a conclusive one. It is ten miles
or twelve miles from the great market for the purchase of his
materials and for the sale of his finished work,
and several miles from the nearest water, affording
water carriage to that market. It was
to no purpose to mist examine Hounslow Heath with
this view: the objections are sufficiently apparent on
the face of the map.
