Dear Sir
Not knowing when Mr Rose would see me, or whether
he ever meant to see me, the project moreover (to say nothing of
the projector) being in the Road to the Ruin, my only resource was
in Mr Long. I told him how matters stood — he said he would
see you about it, and appointed me tomorrow at 1/2 after 1, to
hear the result. It became necessary for me to account to him
for my having applied in the first instance to Mr Rose. I told
him consequently that it was by your direction, and that upon
my asking how that happened, your answer was, that in your late
office you were more in the habit of corresponding with Mr Rose
than with Mr Long: seemed thereupon to betray some little marks
of surprize, speaking as if according to his it had been
othewise. I thought that you might as well be apprised of this, against
he spoke to you. I hope I have not made any blunder in
saying what I did: if I have, you will have the goodness to consider
how perfectly I am in the dark, without any thing whatever to serve
me as a clue. My , if it for one,
