1794 J.B. to Rt Hon Mr Dundas — Not sent
14 Sept 1794
At Ld Spencer's return from the Continent you will have
good news for him — Give you joy, my Lord — the establishment
is knocked up the fellows are ruined, and your land
is safe. You will have the same subject may serve event will furnish matter for another speech
me in course of next if any thing could fall for it by way of combining the carrying on & concluding <add>closing
Parliamentary history of the business, begun by the speech which after
having gone attended six times in hopes of hearing it I was unfortunate
enough to lose at last. Act no mere motion: but
in that place there are men important of that importance enough that
when a man has been introduced by a Minister, and
knocked up by the same Minister, they may be apt to
ask how it goes on only out of curiosity to see what
answer it he would give
I have begun discharging the men. It would be necessary for Administration
to be more speedy than it would be easy for them to be even
when they are in earnest and in good faith, if they wish wished chose to
save the rest. This is not a measure of choice but of
necessity: it the keeping of workmen in pay disposed cast upon inclination but which I have, abundance, but upon
money which I have none.
At Sunday it will be a month since I left took the liberty at your office
at the recommendation of Mr Long in the Horse Guards a letter inclosing a proposed Memorial
to the Treasury, begging a decision an answer regarding on the preliminary point
of the land, and imploring speedy injustice, as preferable to better than
tardy Justice. I might as well have written to the deaf
adder.
It would have had a fuller sound could I have spoken
of the lapse of full month: but besides that had I waited for the
expiration of the month I might as well have waited for
ever it was time for me to write while I possessed the
faculty.
