Nomography or Form
Law the subject, how to promote the appropriate
aptitude of language discourse with reference to it, in its application
to this subject.
1. In so far as the language (the natural national language)
is at the choice of the person in question, choose that
language which in the highest degree is possessed of the
aggregate of the desirable qualities in question.
This language is perhaps the highest. ☞ Shew this in
another place.
2. In so far as the language he employs is found
deficient with reference to this purpose deficient – supply
the deficiency by new locution adapted to the several
particular purposes.
3. In so far as for the framing of these locutions
resort is necessary to be made to another – a foreign language is
found to be necessary, choice of the foreign language
best adapted to the purpose.
Latin the most adapted as being the most copiously
resorted into in the modern language of England, next the language of the south
of Europe.
This failing the Greek must be resorted to. It
is resorted to most abundantly and without simple or
reserve, in long portions of the physical branch of the
field of art and science.
