3. Compressedness or conciseness. Opposite to this quality stands that of a quality having for
its opposite unnecessary diffuseness: In so far as diffusiveness is one
positive quantity, that of compressedness wll be a negative one.

Communication of ideas is on every occasion the
advantage benefit which, on both sides, of at the least on one side,
is commonly unless by mere accident, always sought for in discourse: the labour – i.e. the time and the exertion expended
in the performance and on occasion of the operation, is the price
paid for that this advantage. In the divers In proportion as the import
conveyed expressed by any given quantity of discourse is ample,
being at the same time correct neither incorrect nor redundant
the purchase is advantageous in respect of the value magnitude
of the benefit obtained by it: in proportion as the quantity
of discourse expended is small, the purchase is advantageous
in respect of the purchase smallness price paid.

At a hasty glance, this quantity may present itself as being
of little moment,: especially when it is if it be considered how small the how small
difference in respect of the quantity of discourse expended in
a given length of time how small the difference is will be apt to be between
the most diffuse and the most comprehensive and concise
form of words in which a given import, it being in
both cases exactly the same import, is capable of being expressed.

But in the first place on whatsoever occasions and on each occasion in so far wheresoever and in proportion as
on whatsoever occasion time is , the difference between the utmost degree of
diffuseness not accompanied with redundance and the s utmost degree of comprehensiveness not
accompanied with obscurity or ambiguity: is in proportion may be no
light matter
considerable: and occasions of this sort, being infinitely various may relatively speaking be are upon the whole not unfrequent.

The observation will be found of this observation examples need not be wanting in the
case of oral discourse in that case of that mode of discourse
which has for its instruments an a successive assemblage of audible signs.(a)
(a) ☞ Give examples.
