Without wishing to hurt the feelings of anyone of these individuals who are
now living or any of the relations of those who are dead, we state as a fact that
cannot be contradicted, that not one of them wd have been promoted but for
family interest. Many of these lucky persons have acquired fortunes out of the
Irish Church, amounting to nearly half a million. With douceurs of this magnitude
the Church of England has but one or two prefonnents that can be compared;
these are seized by the parliamentary supporters of Ministers, in the Upper
House for their own enuexions, while the smaller Bishoprics are damned
for their tutors, two of them the Duke of Northumberland's tutor Dr Bethell & the
Earl of Bristol's tutor Dr Bloomfield, presented Petitions on Friday against the
claims of the Catholics. Ld Calthorpe gave a hint that will not be thrown
away in the quarter where it was intended to operate. He said that it was because
he wished to preserve these good things in the church as well as the Church
itself in Ireland, that he shd support Catholic Emancipation. To suppose that
the establishment can be preserved in a country where 500000 only belong to its communion of
6 million are Catholics, where the latter are goaded to desperation, by the denial of their just claims and
may either ignorance of human value of the blindness of infatuation occasioned by dreams of avarice.
