Supplemental Advice, 10 Aug/31

I have spoken above of the need which I conceived to have
place for written statement of the matter of your
complaints – What follows contains my advice
resecting the particulars which a statement made for that purpose will be expected & ought to comprehend in relation to two distinguishable topics a statement
on your part appears to be called for: – one is
the Death of Major Laing; – the other, the disappearance
of certain papers: these papers as
far as I can understand consisting of a Journal
kept by him with or without letters received
by him & copies or brouillons of letters sent by him.

Ub relation to the first of these two topics
the imputation is by far the most serious one
– but neither ought the oher to be neglected.

What connexion there may have been
between the two I have not heard. Allusion
may for ought I know have been made
to it in that long letter which I have:
but not being able to read it without
effort and it being written by I
knew not who to I knew no who it
did not appear to me that my
reading it promised to be of any
use.

The narrative contained in each of
these statements should be kept distinct
from that contained in the other but if between
the two occurrences in question there has
been any connexion that connexion ma

the other
