3 Introduction
Prefixed to the Body of the Work will be an Introduction
exhibiting the general Principles on which the Reason's
abovementioned are grounded. This Introduction is distinguishable
into Two Parts.
Part 1. contains such principles as come under the —
department of Metaphysics, and appertain in common to
the several Provinces of private Ethics, of civil, and of
Penal Legislation.
It explains and indicates the principles of
Utility: It analyses and explodes the several principles
that by possibility may be set up in opposition thereunto.
Setting out upon this Ground, It lays open the several
Sources from whence Pleasure or Pain may issue; —
lays down Rules for estimating the value of a given
Pain or pleasure — exhibits a Catalogue of the several
Pains and Pleasures, and of the Circumstances by which
a man's sensibility to them may be influenced.
It gives an Analytical View of the several possible
Shapes in which the mischievous effects of any —
Action may display itself.
In treating of the Causes which give birth to those
effects, It explains the nature and Varieties of
human Acts, and of the Circumstances with which
they may be accompanied;.
It exhibits an Analytical View of the several Parts
which may be born by the Will or Intention with
States which
